A casual drive down to Tucson, where again, an art museum visited in the past, surprises and delights. A lovely, gray-haired docent provides not only museum data, but a full-fledged Chamber of Commerce recommendation about a “New Tucson”. Though small, their Pre-Columbian material matches my mindset, before meandering off to modest European/American galleries and a charming “out-building” dedicated to Western artists: known and unknown.
Finish my day, at funky Roadrunner Hostel, in conversation with chain-smoking, teenage Philadelphian runaway Jesse, whose bus ride cross-country has dumped him, resourceless, into a strange town with a dramatically different culture. Am able to aid a “lady in distress” (Nikki, from Lyon/France) in need of a cellphone, and get a great “read” on US, from Aussi Bliyne, who must be visiting from another Time dimension.
